NATIONAL AND REGIONAL STATISTICS

According to a recent America Online/Digital Marketing Services, Inc. online survey conducted in Opinion Place of more than 2,000 teens aged 13 -19 years and parents of teens aged 13 - 19 years (both AOL and non-AOL members), the following facts were uncovered:

  • More than half (53%) of teens go online every day. About eight in ten (82%) are online four or more days per week.
  • Teens use the Internet to send email (82%), exchange instant messages (72%), do homework or research for school (71%) and play online games (65%) at least once per month.
  • If teens had to give up something forever, 25% would miss instant messaging or emailing with friends and family the most.
  • Approximately 81% of teens and parents talk about online safety.
  • More than eight in ten teens (84%) listen to online music at least sometimes. Nearly a fourth (22%) listen to online music every time they go online.
  • Teens engage in the following music-related online activities at least once per month: 50% download music, 40% listen to Internet radio, 36% read about musicians, bands, etc. and 33% watch music videos online.
  • Three quarters (75%) of teens who use instant messaging exchange IMs with 1-4 people at the same time.
  • More than half (53%) have communicated with a crush via email or IM.
  • When emailing or using IM, 35% talk about what they did that day and 27% talk about friends or classmates.
  • For 21% of teens, the first thing they do when they get home from school is go online to check email and IM with friends.
  • Teens who use instant messaging have an average of 29 buddies on their Buddy List.
  • Forty-four percent of teens share jokes with other people online and 31% share songs.
  • Twenty-eight percent of teens who spend online, or parents who purchase online for teens, have bought clothing/accessories online for the teen in the past year. Thirty-one percent who spend money online buy things online with the parent’s credit card.
  • Forty-three percent of respondents say that the teen is the best in the household at using the computer; 30% say Mom is the best.

The AOL survey also examined regional patterns in online use among teens in the 15 largest U.S. cities:

New York City Findings:

  • Sixty percent of teens in the New York City area go online seven days a week. Nearly 40% are online 11 or more hours per week.
  • When it comes to online activities, teens in New York send/receive email (84%), do homework or research for school (80%), exchange instant messages (78%), play online games (67%) and get online Buddy icons (50%).
  • For 24% of teens in New York City, the first thing they do when they get home from school is go online to email and IM. IMing and emailing with friends and family is the #1 thing teens in NYC would miss the most if they had to give up one thing up forever.
  • Teens in New York City love their tunes - 80% listen to music online and 47% download free music from the Internet.
  • Forty-six percent communicate by email or IM with someone they have a crush on.
  • Seventy-five percent of New York City teens and parents talk about online safety.

Los Angeles Findings:

  • Nearly 40% (36%) of teens in Los Angeles go online seven days a week. Thirty percent are online 11 or more hours per week.
  • When it comes to online activities, teens in Los Angeles send/receive email (80%), do homework or research for school (80%), exchange instant messages (57%), download music files (55%) and play online games (50%).
  • Teens in Los Angeles love their tunes - 76% listen to music online and 52% download free music from the Internet.
  • Forty-seven percent have communicated by email or IM with someone they have a crush on.
  • Nearly three quarters (74%) of teens in LA who use instant messaging exchange IMs with 1–4 people at the same time.
  • Thirty-four percent of respondents say the teen is the best in the household at using the computer; 41% say Mom is the best.
  • Seventy-five percent of LA teens and parents talk about online safety.

Chicago Findings:

  • Fifty-five percent of teens in Chicago go online seven days a week. Thirty-five percent are online 11 or more hours per week.
  • When it comes to online activities, teens in Chicago send/receive email (84%), exchange instant messages (77%), do homework or research for school (75%), play online games (55%) and download music files (54%).
  • Teens in Chicago love their tunes - 76% listen to music online.
  • Forty-nine percent have communicated by email or IM with someone they have a crush on.
  • In Chicago, 40% of teens, or parents who purchase for teens, say that in a typical month, they spend money online for the teen and 41% who spend online buy things with the parent’s credit card.
  • Seventy-one percent of teens and parents talk about online safety.
  • Forty-five percent of respondents say the teen is the best in the household at using the computer; in 13% of those households, a sibling is the best.

Philadelphia Findings:

  • Sixty-three percent of teens in Philadelphia go online seven days a week. Forty percent are online 11 or more hours per week.
  • For 33% of teens, the first thing they do when they get home from school is go online to email and IM. For 41% of teens, IMing and emailing with friends and family is the #1 thing they would miss the most if they had to give one thing up forever.
  • When it comes to online activities, teens in Philadelphia exchange instant messages (82%), send/receive email (80%), do homework or research for school (80%), play online games (69%) and download music files (54%).
  • Teens in Philadelphia love their tunes - 88% listen to music online.
  • Fifty percent have communicated by email or IM with someone they have a crush on.
  • In Philadelphia, 36% of teens, and parents who purchase for teens, have spent money online in the past year and 32% of teens who spend online buy things online with the parent’s credit card.
  • Eighty-five percent of teens and parents talk about online safety.
  • The teen is the best at using the computer in 60% of Philadelphia households with a teen Internet user; in 8% of those households, a sibling is the best.

San Francisco Findings:

  • Sixty-seven percent of teens in San Francisco go online seven days a week. Thirty-eight percent are online 11 or more hours per week.
  • When it comes to online activities, teens in San Francisco send/receive email (85%), exchange instant messages (76%), do homework or research for school (70%), play online games (61%) and listen to music online (60%).
  • Teens in the Bay City love their tunes - 87% listen to music online and 54% download music from the Internet.
  • Forty-seven percent have communicated by email or IM with someone they have a crush on.
  • Seventy-four percent of those who use instant messaging exchange IMs with 1–4 people at the same time.
  • In San Francisco, 53% of teens, or parents who purchase for teens, say that in a typical month they spend money online for the teen. Forty-four percent who spend online buy clothing/accessories online and 41% buy things online for the teen with the parent’s credit card.
  • Seventy-three percent of teens and parents talk about online safety.
  • The teen is the best at using the computer in 41% of San Francisco households with a teen Internet user; in 4% of those households, a sibling is the best.

Boston Findings:

  • Seventy percent of teens in Boston go online seven days a week. Fifty percent are online 11 or more hours per week.
  • For 42% of teens, the first thing they do when they get home from school is go online to email and IM. For 41%, IMing and emailing with friends and family is the #1 thing they would miss the most if they had to give one thing up forever.
  • When it comes to online activities, teens in Boston send/receive email (93%), exchange instant messages (88%), do homework or research for school (78%), listen to music online (63%) and play online games (62%).
  • Forty-six percent use the Internet to get information about movies and TV shows; 54% get Buddy icons.
  • Teens in Boston love their tunes - 87% listen to music online and 67% download music from the Internet.
  • Sixty-two percent have communicated by email or IM with someone they have a crush on.
  • Eighty-four percent of teens and parents talk about online safety.
  • Forty-six percent of respondents say the teen is the best in the household at using the computer; 30% say Mom is the best.

Dallas/Fort Worth Findings:

  • Nearly 60% of teens in Dallas/Ft. Worth go online seven days a week. Forty percent are online 11 or more hours per week.
  • When it comes to online activities, teens in Dallas/Ft. Worth send/receive email (79%), exchange instant messages (70%), play online games (66%), do homework or research for school (64%) and listen to music online (59%).
  • Forty-six percent use the Internet to get information about movies and TV shows; 43% use it to watch a video or movie clip.
  • Teens in Dallas/Ft. Worth love their tunes - 90% listen to music online and 55% download music from the Internet.
  • Fifty-eight percent have communicated by email or IM with someone they have a crush on.
  • When emailing or instant messaging, 38% of Dallas/Ft. Worth teens discuss what they did that day; 31% discuss friends or classmates.
  • Seventy-three percent of those who use instant messaging exchange IMs with 1–4 people at the same time.
  • Fifty-two percent of teens, or parents who purchase for teens, say that in a typical month they spend money online for the teen, and 33% who spend online buy clothing/accessories online for the teen.
  • Eighty-two percent of teens and parents talk about online safety.
  • The teen is the best at using the computer in 40% of Dallas/Ft. Worth households with a teen Internet user; in 29% of those households, Mom is the best.

Washington, D.C. Findings:

  • More than half (54%) of teens in Washington, D.C. go online seven days a week. Thirty-five percent are online 11 or more hours per week.
  • When it comes to online activities, teens in D.C. send/receive email (83%), exchange instant messages (75%), do homework or research for school (72%), play online games (62%), listen to music online (49%) and get Buddy icons (40%).
  • Thirty-seven percent use the Internet to get information about movies and TV shows; 33% use it to watch a video or movie clip.
  • Teens in Washington, D.C. love their tunes - 83% listen to music online and 48% download music from the Internet.
  • Fifty percent have communicated by email or IM with someone they have a crush on.
  • When emailing or instant messaging, 32% of Washington, D.C. teens discuss what they did that day; 21% discuss friends or classmates.
  • More than 50% share jokes with other people online; 35% share interesting or unique websites.
  • In the past year, 31% of teens, or parents who purchase for teens, who spend online have purchased music online, such as CDs, tapes or online music for the teen.
  • Thirty-nine percent of respondents say the teen is the best in the household at using the computer; 30% say Mom is the best.
  • Seventy percent of teens and parents talk about online safety.

Atlanta Findings:

  • Nearly sixty percent (58%) of teens in Atlanta go online seven days a week. Thirty-seven percent are online 11 or more hours per week.
  • When it comes to online activities, teens in Atlanta send/receive email (82%), do homework or research for school (72%), play online games (70%), exchange instant messages (70%), listen to music online (58%) and gather local information on things like concerts, movie listings, stores or restaurants (46%).
  • For 27% of teens, instant messaging/emailing with friends and family is the thing they would miss the most if they had to give up one thing forever.
  • Forty-three percent use the Internet to get information about movies and TV shows.
  • Teens in Atlanta love their tunes - 86% listen to music online and 44% download free music from the Internet.
  • Forty-five percent have communicated by email or IM with someone they have a crush on.
  • When emailing or instant messaging, 34% of Atlanta teens discuss what they did that day; 30% discuss friends or classmates.
  • In the past year, 33% of teens, or parents who purchase for teens, who spend online have purchased clothing/accessories online; nearly a third (30%) who spend online use the parent’s credit card to purchase goods online.
  • Forty-six percent of respondents say the teen is the best in the household at using the computer; 35% say Mom is the best.
  • Eighty-six percent of teens and parents talk about online safety.

Detroit Findings:

  • Nearly sixty percent (57%) of teens in Detroit go online seven days a week. Forty-two percent are online 11 or more hours per week.
  • When it comes to online activities, teens in Detroit send/receive email (80%), exchange instant messages (76%), do homework or research for school (75%), play online games (66%), listen to music online (54%) and get Buddy icons (39%).
  • For 36%, instant messaging/emailing with friends and family is the thing they would miss the most if they had to give up one thing forever.
  • Teens in Detroit love their tunes - 85% listen to music online and 47% download free music from the Internet.
  • Sixty-one percent have communicated by email or IM with someone they have a crush on.
  • One third (33%) of teens, or parents who purchase for teens, say they spend money online for the teen in a typical month.
  • The teen is the best at using the computer in 50% of Detroit households with a teen Internet user; in 32% of households with a teen Internet user, Mom is the best.
  • Eighty-four percent of teens and parents talk about online safety.

Houston Findings:

  • Thirty-nine percent of teens in Houston go online seven days a week. Thirty percent are online 11 or more hours per week.
  • For 21%, IMing and emailing with friends and family is the #1 thing they would miss the most if they had to give one thing up forever.
  • When it comes to online activities, teens in Houston do homework or research for school (77%), send/receive email (74%), play online games (69%), exchange instant messages (58%) and listen to music online (52%).
  • Thirty-three percent use the Internet to watch video or movie clips; 29% to send email greeting cards or to get Buddy icons.
  • Teens in Houston love their tunes - 85% listen to music online and 53% download music from the Internet.
  • Ninety percent of teens and parents talk about online safety.
  • Forty-nine percent say that Mom is the best in the household at using the computer.

Seattle/Tacoma Findings:

  • Fifty-one percent of teens in Seattle/Tacoma go online seven days a week. Thirty-seven percent are online 11 or more hours per week.
  • For 27%, IMing and emailing with friends and family is the #1 thing they would miss the most if they had to give one thing up forever.
  • When it comes to online activities, teens in Seattle/Tacoma send/receive email (74%), do homework or research for school (71%), exchange instant messages (65%), download music files (51%) and play online games (49%).
  • Thirty-two percent use the Internet to watch movie or video clips; 31% send email greeting cards.
  • Teens in Seattle/Tacoma love their tunes - 83% listen to music online and 52% download music from the Internet.
  • Fifty-one percent have communicated by email or IM with someone they have a crush on.
